What We're Watching: Jonny Quest
Jonny Quest recently turned forty. It was September 1964 that Jonny made his television debut and kids everywhere have been wide-eyed ever since. If you're a fan like me you'll be interested to know that Jonny Quest: the Complete First Season is now available on DVD. All 26 episodes are included on this disk, along with some nifty special features— the best of which is a vintage P.F. Flyers advert!
For a generation of baby boomers this series left a big impression on our young minds. The globe-trotting family rolled, flew, hovered and sailed some cool new toy each week. For most of my adolescence I drew contraptions that looked like mockups for the next episode.
Alas, after only one season the cutting edge series was shelved. America wasn't ready for a cartoon on television after dark. From then on Jonny Quest would only show up on Saturday morning TV. And somehow The Mystery of the Lizard Men just didn't seem as sinister in the morning with a bowl of Frosted Flakes.
Afficianados will note the DVD only contains the original episodes broadcast on prime-time TV during the 1964-1965 season. No space is wasted on the so-called "second season" that was produced for cable and known, ironically, as The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest. That plus the special features that are actually special make this a great DVD to add to your collection!
